Frequently Asked Q's

How do you make your dice?

Our dice are handmade using resin (along with lightweight inclusions, such as dyes, flowers, gold foil, and paper butterflies), and are cast in a silicone mold and pressure pot to reduce bubbling. After they are cast, they are sanded, polished, and inked.

Why are handmade dice so expensive?

Great question - our dice are designed, poured, sanded, polished and inked in-house. This is a time-consuming process that takes hours of manual labor, and the materials are not cheap. These prices ensure living wages for our work!

Are handmade dice balanced?

The short answer is yes. We use a pressure pot to cast our dice under high pressure to reduce bubbles, and our inclusions are either equal to or lighter than the resin itself. We also carefully inspect, then test each die for imperfections that could cause imbalance. We are able to pay much more attention than massive companies like Chessex can afford to each individual die.

Just like mass-produced dice, these sets are certainly not casino-grade. That being said, they are perfectly acceptable for tabletop games and casual play.

What should I expect when buying handmade dice?

First (and most importantly), these sets are made completely by hand. That means that there may be some micro scratches and edge lines that we are unable to sand off without compromising the integrity of the die. Any noticeable marks will be mentioned in the listing, so please review carefully before you purchase.

One more thing to keep in mind is that resin dice are a bit lighter than factory made dice. This can be confusing if you don't expect it!

My kid likes shiny stuff. Should I get them a set?

Please use your best judgement - it's important to remember that these are sharp-edge dice, unlike most round-edge dice sold in stores. This means the edges and corners are quite a bit pointier than you might be used to. Take it from us - they are not fun to step on.

These dice are small, and would present a choking hazard if swallowed. They should be kept away from small children and animals and handled with care.

How often do you release new sets?

Dicemaking is a very time-consuming process, and we (unfortunately) also have to maintain full time jobs! We try to upload 3-5 finished sets a month, and offer sales every few months to clear out older inventory.

Do you take commissions? How long is the turnaround?

At the moment, our commission list is quite full. Once we're more caught up, we'll reopen for custom orders.

A custom-ordered set generally takes about 2-3 months to finish - this could be more or less depending on the complexity of the design. We hold ourselves to a very high standard for these sets, and take the time needed to ensure you get exactly what you envision.

What is your return/refund policy?

Since this is a small handmade shop, we are not able to accept returns or refunds. If your package arrives damaged, is lost, or if you are unhappy with your dice, please reach out to us and we will figure out the best course of action from there.

What's the story behind the name?

Kodiak Dice Co. is named in honor of Kodi, our founder's pandemic rescue pup. He's a special guy who changed her life (and is quite often the recipient of the proceeds of this shop).
